 | Tenth coordination meeting of the LALA Project – Online. |
Due to the situation caused by COVID-19, the LALA Project virtually continues its coordination meetings. The tenth coordination meeting of the LALA project took place online on June 03 and 04, 2020. The main topics of this meeting were:
- The implications of the coronavirus situation in the project, as well as the progress since the last meeting of the different partners regarding the piloting, the adaptation of the respective tools, and their manuals.
- Likewise, work continues on the planning of activities of the SOLAR Special Interest Group (LALA-SIG), whose main objective is the promotion of good research and the transfer of best practices in capacity building of Learning Analytical in Latin America as a continuation of the LALA project.
- In addition, during this meeting, administrative and quality and project management were discussed, as well as dissemination activities, such as training packages and future dissemination actions.
- Finally, it was also discussed the planning of the LALA 2020 Conference to be held in the city of Cuenca – Ecuador, on October 1 and 2, as well as the location of the next LALA Conferences in 2021 and 2022

| Ninth coordination meeting of the LALA Project – Online. |
Due to the situation that the COVID-19 has caused, the «face-to-face» meeting in Leuven and the workshop of the LALA project in LAK were suspended. Therefore, the ninth coordination meeting of the LALA project took place online on March 19 and 20, 2020. The main focuses of this meeting were:
- The implications of the coronavirus outbreak in the project as well as the progress since the last meeting of the different partners regarding the piloting and the adaptation of the tools.
- Recently, the LALA Special Interest Group of SoLAR was created and its main objective will be the promotion of good research and transfer of best practices in capacity building of Learning Analytics in Latin America as a continuation of the LALA project.
- Besides, during this meeting, administrative and quality and project management issues were discussed as well as dissemination activities such as training packages and tentative future dissemination actions.
- Finally, it was also discussed the host of the next LALA Conferences and LASI-locals 2021 and 2022.
There is a possibility to make the next «face-to-face» coordination meeting in Leuven, Belgium in September (10-11-12 of September) if COVID-19 allows it.

| Regional meeting of capacity building projects was developed under the field of Higher Education – Quito, Ecuador. |
On December 11 and 12, in the city of Quito, the regional meeting of capacity building projects was developed under the field of Higher Education of Erasmus+ projects implemented in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. LALA team members from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral and Universidad de Cuenca announced the LALA project to the representatives of the other projects attending the event.

| Workshop on Learning Analytics for Management in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) – Congress on Information and Communication Technologies – TICEC 2019. |
On November 27, LALA team members developed the Workshop on Learning Analytics for Management in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) within the framework of the Congress on Information and Communication Technologies – TICEC 2019. In this workshop, an introduction to the concept of learning analytics was made, as well as, the LALA Framework and its different dimensions: Institutional, Technical, Ethical and Community. Examples of tools implemented and adapted at the Universities of Cuenca and the Polytechnic School of the Coast were also presented.

At the EC-TEL 2019 conference in Delft the Netherlands in September 2019, the LALA project partners organized a workshop to supports the shaping of the research line of Explainable Learning Analytics (XLA). During the workshop, the 44 international participants collaboratively explored the challenges and opportunities related to the data, stakeholders, communication, evaluation, and implementation & adoption of XLA.

| Eighth «face-to-face» coordination meeting of the LALA project – Madrid, Spain. |
The eighth coordination meeting of the LALA project took place on October 16, 17, and 18, 2019, in Madrid – Spain. The main focuses of this meeting were the piloting and dissemination work packages. All partners presented their advance in the last months since the last face-to-face meeting in Leuven regarding their pilots. In particular, the following topics were covered: monitoring of the progress of the pilots, analysis, and evaluation of the pilots, agreement on the final document to report the pilots, assignment of tasks and deadlines.
This meeting had a different format from the previous face-to-face meetings since there was more time for bilateral meetings and discussions in groups. Besides, during this meeting, administrative and project management issues were discussed as well as dissemination activities such as training packages and future dissemination actions. The next coordination meeting will be in Leuven, Belgium, from March 19 to 21, 2020.

Pedro J. Muñoz-Merino (Carlos III University of Madrid) introduced the LALA Project during the “Visualizing Learning” session of the eMOOCs 2019 Congress. This event was held in Naples (Italy) on May 20, 21 and 22. The eMOOCs Congress is one of the leading MOOC congresses worldwide. As part of the MOOCs, the learning analysis is essential as it allows the analysis of data from many students who interact in these platforms.

On June 27, a 2-hour workshop about the LALA project took place in Vigo (Spain). This workshop was part of the activities of the LASI-Spain 2019 event, an annual event on learning analytics that was organized in Spain. The workshop was taught by Mar Pérez-Sanagustín (Pontifical Catholic University of Chile) and Pedro J. Muñoz-Merino (Carlos III University of Madrid). During this workshop, several topics were introduced such as the objectives of the LALA project, the ongoing activities, how to apply the LALA framework in a practical manner, the different tools that have been adapted in the LALA project, etc.

Rafael Mello had presented about the LALA project during the International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies and Technology-enhanced Learning. During the event, that took place in Brazil, Rafael shared the initial results of the adoption of LALA framework at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco.

On July 5, Isabel Hilliger, a member of the LALA team project, participated in the workshop held for the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) in Monterrey, Mexico. The presentation, called “Learning Analytics and Artificial Intelligence to Improve the Quality of Higher Education”, had an audience of about 107 teachers from different high schools and faculties of the UANL. Attendees had the opportunity to:
- Identify learning analytics needs in their institutions through the LALA Canvas.
- Understand what technical and ethical considerations are relevant when adopting a learning analytical tool at the institutional level.
- Learn more about the LALA community and about the opportunities to exchange experiences in the region.
| Seventh «face-to-face» coordination meeting of the LALA project held in Leuven – Belgium. |
The seventh coordination meeting of the LALA project took place on July 2, 3 and 4, 2019 in Leuven – Belgium. The main objective of the meeting was the piloting process of the LALA tools. In particular, the following topics about the pilots were covered: situation and progress of the pilots, high and low level indicators, evaluation of the different tools, connection between the pilots and the LALA Framework, additional partners for the piloting phase and the scope of the LALA Handbook. In addition, during this meeting, administrative and project management issues were discussed, as well as the results of the interim report evaluation submitted to the European Commission in mid-April. The next coordination meeting will be in Madrid, Spain, from October 16 to 18, 2019.
| LALA Symposium |
The KU Leuven, together with the partners of the LALA Project, organized in Leuven – Belgium, the Symposium Learning Analytics for Feedback at Scale. This event held on Monday, July 1, 2019, aimed to contribute to bridging the gap between research and actual educational practice. This symposium, in particular, focused on using learning analytics to provide the involved stakeholders with feedback at scale. These stakeholders can be students, teachers, but also student advisers or policymakers. For this, the symposium had the participation and exposure of several members of the Project and KU Leuven academic staff.
| Sixth “face-to-face” coordination meeting of the LALA project. |
The sixth coordination meeting of the LALA project took place on March 20th and 21st, 2019 in Valdivia – Chile. During this meeting, representatives of Learning Analytics Peru were invited to make a presentation of their aims, activities, and possible connection with the LALA project. Learning Analytics Peru is a non-profit organization which wants to be leader in learning analytics in Peru. In this meeting, in addition, administrative and project management issues were discussed, especially in reference to the interim report to be submitted to the European Commission in mid-April. The main objective of the meeting was to present the lessons learned from the design of LA tools in Latin America. KUL made a presentation in which different lessons from the design of LA tools in Latin America were presented. In addition, ESPOL presented the deployment of the different tools for the pilots of the project and all Latin American partners presented their plans for deployment for their pilots. Finally, during this meeting, a new logo for the LALA project was presented. The next coordination meeting will be in Leuven, Belgium, from July 02 to 04, 2019. Moreover, on July 1st, the Symposium “Learning Analytics for Feedback at Scale” will be held organized by KU Leuven.

| Learning Analytics to support the learning processes in Higher Education Institutions: Management and Research.– Jorge Maldonado |
As part of the activities of the Latin-American Community of Learning Analytics of the Erasmus + LALA project, LALA team members worked intensively with a group of researchers from the Laboratory of Innovation and Educational Research UCO1808 of the Teaching Directorate of the University of Concepción-Chile for the adoption of learning analytics. As part of the activities, a talk was developed, entitled “Learning Analytics to support the learning processes in Higher Education Institutions: Management and Research”.
The Laboratory of Innovation and Educational Research of Concepción is carrying out an important project funded by the Ministry of Education of Chile to develop blended learning initiatives supported by technology in order to improve the retention rates of students in basic sciences.
| Project LALA: Framework for the adoption of learning analytics in Latin America – Miguel Ángel Zúñiga |
On May 31st, Miguel Angel Zuniga, local coordinator of the LALA Project for the University of Cuenca presented the keynote speech “Project LALA: Framework for the adoption of learning analytics in Latin America.” This talk was given under the framework of the International Conference on Advances in Emerging Trends and Technologies – ICAETT 2019 in Quito, Ecuador. This keynote presented the LALA methodological framework (The LALA Framework) whose objective is to support the development of the culture of learning analytics in higher education institutions in Latin America. This methodological framework guides the design, implementation and adoption of learning analytical tools from four fundamental dimensions:
- The institutional dimension, related to the political and strategic aspects of the institution;
- The technological dimension, related to the technical aspects associated with the design and implementation of technological tools;
- The ethical dimension, related to the ethical aspects of data processing and management; and
- The communal dimension, related to the generation of a research community and good practices around learning analytics in Latin America.

On Tuesday, May 28th, Isabel Hilliger, member of the LALA team, participated in the workshop “Student Success Informed by Learning Analytics and Artificial Intelligence” conducted by the consortium STHEM Brazil. In this workshop, which involved 171 teachers from 50 Higher Education Institutions in Brazil, Isabel discussed the adoption of Learning Analytics tools. Participants had the opportunity to:
- Identify learning analytics needs in their institutions through the LALA Canvas.
- Understand what technical and ethical considerations are relevant when adopting learning analytics tools at the institutional level.
- Learn more about the LALA Community and about the opportunities to exchange experiences in the region.

On May 14, Isabel Hilliger, Deputy Director of Measurement, Evaluation and Quality at the School of Engineering – Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) and member of the LALA team participated in a webinar through Microsoft Teams organized by U-Planner. This webinar counted on the participation of 15 assistants, among them, managers of the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia.The objectives to fulfill were:
- Disseminate the LALA project among decision makers of Latin American universities, providing guidelines on how to join the community, and
- Present the case of the adoption of an analytical tool for the continuous improvement of curricula in the School of Engineering of the PUC and the way to exemplify the use of learning analytics in the educational management of Higher Education Institutions in the region.
| II Latin American Conference on Learning Analytics LALA 2019 was held in Valdivia – Chile |
The Austral University of Chile, UACh, together with the LALA partners, Carlos III University of Madrid – Spain, University of Edinburgh – United Kingdom, KU Leuven – Belgium, University of Cuenca – Ecuador, Escuela Politécnica del Litoral – Ecuador and Pontifical Catholic University of Chile – Chile, organized in Valdivia – Chile, the II Latin American Conference on Learning Analytics LALA 2019.
The Conference, which took place for the second time in Latin America, was held on March 18th and 19th. The Conference aimed to reflect the development of Learning Analytics in Latin American countries, to be a window to observe the state of the art of Learning Analytics in other nations, and to present the Learning Analytics community for Latin America.
For the Conference, 35 articles were received, whose authors came from 9 countries: Uruguay, Ecuador, Chile, Colombia, USA, México, Brazil, Guatemala and Argentina. With an acceptance rate of 54%, 19 articles were included in the program, distributed in 14 oral presentations and five posters.
During the event, Carlos Alario, the representative of Carlos III University of Madrid, opened the session with his presentation entitled “Decision making based on educational data analysis”. Traditionally, the teaching and learning processes have been developed taking as a reference the own experience of teachers and students. However, nowadays, data is essential for decision making in education. Teachers must rely on data to improve the content they offer to students and redesign their classes. Students must rely on data to improve their self-regulatory learning skills. The potential of a correct use of the data affects any educational level (pre-university education, higher education, lifelong learning), and educational context (face-to-face education, virtual education, hybrid education – blended).
LALA Framework
In order to support the development and adoption of learning analytics in this region, the project “Building Capacity to Use Learning Analytics to Improve Higher Education in Latin America (LALA Project)” – co-funded by the Erasmus + Program of the European Union- has developed the LALA framework (or LALA Framework). The objective of this framework is to guide the design, implementation and use of learning analytical tools in Higher Education Institutions in Latin America. This LALA framework has been developed in joint work with Latin American and European universities, taking as a reference the framework proposed by the SHEILA project and other European projects.
Specifically, the framework is composed of four fundamental dimensions: 1) the Institutional dimension, which considers the current and desired state of the institution in relation to policies and strategies for the incorporation of LA tools; 2) the Technological dimension, which considers the technical needs for the adoption and / or the design and implementation of LALA tools in the institution; 3) the Ethics dimension, which considers the necessary guidelines for the ethical use of data, safeguarding the privacy of users, maximizing the benefits associated with the use of educational data and minimizing the possible risks of their manipulation; and, 4) the Communal dimension, which proposes a series of guidelines for the institution to be integrated into a LALA Community and thus have support for research and development in this area.
Each of these dimensions is addressed in a manual, and each manual describes the methodologies and instruments to support different processes. This work has been protected by Creative Commons (CC) with the aim of facilitating adaptation and use for other contexts. Fifth “face-to-face” coordination meeting of the LALA project

The fifth coordination meeting of the LALA project took place on November 27th and 28, 2018 in the City of Cuenca – Ecuador. This meeting, besides dealing with administrative issues and project management, had as a main objective to present the advances in the development of the “back-end” of the learning analytics tools that are being adapted. Likewise, a LALA architecture was proposed that is composed of the following elements: web application (front-end and back-end), anonymization service, authorization server and database, with the aim that each institution will replicate this architecture. Additionally, the preliminary results of the early warning system for the detection of students at risk of dropping out (UC3M) and the advances in the design of the counseling tool (KU Leuven) were presented. The University of Edinburgh, for its part, is helping all Latin American partners to use the On Task learning analytics tool. This tool is especially useful for providing feedback and personalized learning. Finally, during this meeting, agreements were established on the tasks to be carried out to adapt the learning analytics tools, their managers and deadlines. Also, it was agreed that the data collection for pilots will begin in April 2019 and the piloting phase will end in June 2020. The next coordination meeting will be in Valdivia, Chile, from March 20 to 21, 2019. On the other hand, on March 18 and 19, the II Latin American Conference on Learning Analyzes will be held – LALA 2019 organized by Universidad Austral de Chile.

The University of Cuenca, together with the partners of the LALA Project, organized in Cuenca – Ecuador, the Symposium “Learning Analytics for Management in Institutions of Higher Education. Ecuador Chapter “. This event, held on Monday, November 26, 2018, aimed to present the benefits and challenges of the implementation of the Learning Analytics in Latin America to the main representatives and researchers of the Universities of the Region. Likewise, different tools were presented that are being developed and adapted by the members of the LALA Project. For this, the symposium had the participation and exposure of several members of the Project.

Seminar: Providing personalized feedback using OnTask

On October 3rd, 2018, the “Providing personalized feedback using OnTask” seminar was organized by the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia. In this event, OnTask was presented, a software tool that collects and evaluates data on students’ activities throughout the semester. This tool allows instructors to design personalized comments with suggestions about their learning strategies. To achieve this, the seminar was attended by Dr. Rafael Ferreira, a professor at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco in Brazil and currently a postdoctoral visiting researcher at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
CLEI-LACLO 2018

Within the framework of the CLEI-LACLO 2018 conference, the Latin American Informatics Conference – (CLEI) and the Latin American Conference on Learning Technologies – (LACLO), held from October 1st to 5th, 2018 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the facilities of the Mackenzie University, the diffusion of the LALA community was carried out. A meeting was also held with the CLEI working groups with whom agreements were sought with the purpose of strengthening the community and creating a specific working group on Learning Analytics.

Fourth face-to-face meeting September 2018

From September 11th to September 13th, the fourth meeting of the LALA Project (Learning Analytics in Latin America) was held at University of Edinburgh (Scotland). This meeting focused mainly on the adaptation of learning analytics tools and the validation of the LALA Framework. The different Latin American partners presented preliminary results of their analysis of the focus groups. In addition, reports on administrative and project managements activities were informed. The main agreements approved by the steering committee were the following. Jorge Maldonado (representative from PUC) will be the LALA community coordinator. A new version of the LALA community statutes is approved. An agreement with the UNESCO Chair of Digital Education, coordinated by Prof. Carlos Delgado Kloos (UC3M), in which, the new members of the LALA community will become members of the UNESCO Chair of Digital Education. A bulletin with information about the LALA project will be sent to the LALA community with a periodicity of 6 months.
The next coordination meeting will be in Cuenca, Ecuador from November Tuesday 27th to Wednesday 28th, 2018. On Monday, November 26th, the symposium “Analytical learning for management in Higher Education Institutions. Ecuador Chapter”, organized by the University of Cuenca will also be held.
The upcoming LALA workshop and summer school will take place during 2 days in Valdivia (18th and 19th March 2019), being UACH the local organizers.
Talk “Discovering learning strategies”

On September 11th, 2018, in the auditorium of the University Foundation of Popayán, Colombia, the talk “Discovering learning strategies” was presented. Furthermore, the LALA Community that guides Jorge Maldonado was also presented. The event was organized by the Educational Innovation Seminar SINNE of the InnovAccion Cauca project, MOOCMenTES and MOOC-MAKER.

The Escuela Politécnica del Litoral, ESPOL, together with the LALA partners, Carlos III University of Madrid – Spain, University of Edinburgh – United Kingdom, KU Leuven – Belgium, University of Cuenca – Ecuador, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile – Chile and Austral University of Chile – Chile, organized in Guayaquil – Ecuador, the I Latin American Conference on Analytical Learning and Summer School LALA 2018.
The Conference and Summer School, which took place for the first time in Latin America, was held on July 9th and 10th. The Conference, on the one hand, aimed to reflect the development of Learning Analytics in Latin American countries, to be a window to observe the state of the art of Learning Analytics in other nations, and to present the Learning Analytics community for Latin America. On the other hand, the Summer School sought to train researchers interested in this subject, through prestigious exhibitors who are part of the LALA Project Consortium.
For the Conference, 37 articles were received, whose authors come from 12 countries: Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Spain, the United States, Uruguay and Venezuela. With an acceptance rate of 60%, 22 articles were included in the program, distributed in 14 presentations and eight posters.
During the event, Carlos Alario, the representative of Carlos III University of Madrid, presented the scope of the LALA project, which seeks to improve the quality, efficiency and relevance of Higher Education in Latin America; developing local capacities to create, adapt, implement and adopt Learning Analytics tools that improve the academic decision-making process.
Third face-to-face meeting July 2018

On Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th, July 2018, the third face-to-face meeting of the LALA Project (Learning Analytics in Latin America) was held at the Escuela Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) in Guayaquil, Ecuador. This meeting, besides coordinating the administrative and project management issues, focused mainly on the formation of the LALA Community, which includes institutions but also specific people interested in learning analytics (LA) in Latin America.
Likewise, another important point of the meeting was the presentation of the first version of the LA adoption guide called “LALA Framework”. LALA Framework is a set of guidelines and instruments to facilitate and promote the design, implementation and adoption of LA tools at the institutional level, related to four dimensions: institutional, technological, ethical and the fourth dimension of the community.
In addition, initial steps were taken to adapt tools and services for learning analytics in Latin America. Finally, the dates for the next coordination meetings were planned and established, which will be in Edinburgh, Scotland from September 10th to 12th, 2018 and in Cuenca, Ecuador from November 27 to 29th, 2018 F.
One upcoming event is, a symposium on “Analytical learning for management and quality in Higher Education Institutions in Ecuador” which will be organized by the University of Cuenca on Monday, November 26th this year.

In this event, the current state and the challenges of Learning analytics were approached. To achieve this, the seminar counted on the participation and exhibition of several members of the LALA Project.
Second meeting March 2018

On Monday, March 19th and Tuesday, March 20th, the second meeting of the LALA Project (Learning Analytics Latin America) was held at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile. The objective of this meeting was to report the progress of the activities of the first six months of the project, as well as to plan and coordinate the following tasks to be carried out.
The final versions of the management guidelines, the conflict resolution protocol and the quality plan were presented first. As a second point, advances were made in the creation of the LALA Community as well as in the organization of the First Latin American Conference and Summer School of Learning Analytics to be held in Guayaquil – Ecuador from 9 to 10 July 2018.
One of the the most important points of the meeting was the presentation of the progress of the LA adoption guide called “LALA Framework”. This framework is composed of 3 guides that are: 1) institutional and ethical dimensions, 2) technical and methodological aspects, and 3) common aspects. As a final activity of the meeting, the planning of the type of tools to be developed for the adaptation and testing phase began.
On March 21, the seminar “learning analytics for management and quality in higher education” was held, organized by the UC Engineering School and U-Planner. International Conference on Learning Analysis and Knowledge LAK18

Martijn Millecamp, KU Leuven (Belgium), promoted the LALA Project during the Eighth International Conference on Learning Analysis and Knowledge LAK18. The Conference was held in Sydney, Australia, from March 5th to 9th, 2018.
Kick off meeting December 2017

From December 11th to December 13th, the kick-off meeting was carried out at Universidad Carlos III of Madrid, in which the work packages were established, along with each university’s activities and responsibilities.
There were workshops and presentations about Learning Analytics tools in charge of KULeuven, University of Edinburgh and, Carlos III University of Madrid, as well as presentations about available systems, data and expectations in Learning Analytics in charge of ESPOL, UACH, PUC and U. CUENCA universities.
The objectives, methodologies, and results of the SHEILA project were presented, as well as the objectives, methodologies, and activities of the LALA framework and how to apply the SHEILA project on it.
